Harkerville Trail

Situated in the Garden route close to Plettenberg Bay, this trail offers four different routes. The routes’ distances vary from 12 to 27km. While you get to decide which route you're interested in, as well as the distance, this trail has even more to offer. You can cycle through fynbos, indigenous forest areas and plantations guaranteed to give you the scenery and fresh air you've been looking for. At the Harkerville Trail in Garden Route, you can enjoy a low impact cycle or an intense workout; it’s up to you!

Boschendal Trail Centre

This trail is in Franschhoek, which means you can enjoy cycling through a beautiful wine estate. This is perfect for a cycling family outing. The farm has a natural beauty to it, and it has some hard, yet exhilarating climbs for mountain bike lovers. Packed with singletracks through the estate, the trail centre has five trails with varying distances. Trails begin from 4 km to 23 km. While the 4 km trail is suitable for the whole family, if you're looking for a more advanced route, the 23 km trail, which is known as the Black XL route, is perfect for you. The route adds an extra 3-4 sections onto the Black Route. Make sure you have suitable apparel such as a mountain bike helmet and mountain bike gear on all your routes, especially the Black XL route. And, keep in mind that you need to have a permit, either an MTD Day Permit, Boschendal Annual Permit, or a Winelands Annual Permit before you can use the facility.

Meerendal wine farm

If you're interested in mountain biking in Cape Town where you are surrounded by greenery and a farm leading you to a vineyard, farmhouse and a dam, then this is the trail for you. It’s a medium impact trail with a duration of 1 to 3 hours, depending on your pace. To gain access to this picture-perfect trail, you will need a permit. You can get one at the Security Gate House at the starting point of the trail, or you can join a cycling club such as the Meerendal Club or Tygerberg MTB and get free access. Here are tips on how to find the right cycling team

Majik Forest

This is one of the most beautiful sceneries in Cape Town and has a rich history. It is one of the oldest mountain bike trails in the Northern Suburbs and is a public space that can be enjoyed by mountain bikers, dog walkers, runners and hikers. This trail is 11.63 km and is predominantly a singletrack ride. This route has no signs and is free for all to use, so you should travel in groups or travel with someone who knows the area to avoid getting lost. There is no fee as it is a public space; however, it is close to Bloemendal Trail Centre, and if you wish to cross over, you will have to pay for the permit.

If you're around the Somerset West area, then this is the perfect trail for you. Helderberg Trails has four options for you to try depending on your need and has a beautiful view once you reach the end of the trail, which is perfect for viewing and taking a picture. Beginners can take the 4 km route, intermediate riders can take the 6 km route, and experienced cyclists can take the 14 km or the 17 km loop. Once you're done cycling, you can enjoy their facilities which include a braai area, petting zoo for children and a kiosk for snacks and refreshments.
